El Paso’s 90th Sun Bowl Parade to Celebrate ‘Famous Sports & Movie Scenes’ with New Grand Marshal

El Paso’s beloved Thanksgiving tradition is getting a cinematic and athletic makeover. Organizers have officially announced that the 90th annual Sun Bowl Parade, set for November 2026, will adopt the theme “Famous Sports & Movie Scenes,” promising a nostalgic spectacle that blends Hollywood blockbusters with legendary moments from the playing field.

The milestone parade will also feature a newly named grand marshal, though details on the individual’s identity were revealed alongside an extension of the event’s planning timeline. The theme aims to transform the downtown El Paso route into a living storyboard, with floats, marching bands, and performers recreating iconic imagery—from the dramatic finish of “Rocky” to the high-flying action of “Top Gun” or the underdog triumphs of classic sports films.

“This year, we’re honoring the stories that have inspired generations,” said a parade committee spokesperson. “Whether it’s a famous touchdown or a movie scene that made you cheer, we want the floats to feel like stepping into a screen.”

The Sun Bowl Parade, a fixture since 1936, draws tens of thousands of spectators each Thanksgiving morning. The 90th edition marks a significant milestone, and organizers are pulling out all stops to ensure the event feels both fresh and reflective of El Paso’s deep community roots. The extended planning period will allow for more elaborate float designs and community participation opportunities.

Local businesses, schools, and nonprofit groups are already being invited to submit float concepts based on the theme. “We want El Paso to see itself in these scenes,” the spokesperson added. “From the Alamo to the Sun Bowl stadium, our city has its own star power.”

The parade will proceed along its traditional route through downtown, culminating near the Sun Bowl stadium ahead of the college football game. As the city counts down to the 2026 holiday, the promise of a Hollywood-style Thanksgiving morning is already generating buzz among families and film buffs alike.
