The NCAA has once again asked Division I baseball coaches to avoid canceling nonconference midweek games as a strategy to protect their postseason standing. This request, which has become a yearly appeal, targets a practice where some programs drop lower-profile opponents from the schedule to keep their strength of schedule and win-loss record favorable for tournament selection.
The concern is that these cancellations hurt smaller programs that rely on revenue and exposure from playing bigger schools. When a power conference team cancels a midweek game against a mid-major, it can also disrupt that team's season planning and budget. The NCAA's message is clear: the integrity of the regular season matters, and manipulating the schedule to game the system undermines fair competition.
Coaches have defended the practice by pointing to limited pitching staffs and the need to rest players before conference series. But the NCAA argues that if every coach follows the same logic, the entire nonconference schedule loses meaning. The organization is not threatening penalties this year, but the repeated emphasis suggests that if voluntary compliance does not improve, formal rules could follow.
For now, the NCAA is relying on sportsmanship and a shared commitment to the game. Whether that will be enough to change behavior remains uncertain, but the message has been sent again.
