The Baltimore Orioles made a roster move on Monday, sending left-handed pitcher Cade Povich back to Triple-A Norfolk. The decision comes just one day after Povich took the mound for the big league club in a start against the Houston Astros.
Povich, who has been shuttling between the majors and minors this season, allowed four runs on six hits over 4.2 innings in that appearance. He walked two batters and struck out five. While he kept the team within striking distance, the coaching staff felt it was time to give him a breather and reassess his development at the Triple-A level.
The 24-year-old has shown flashes of promise in his limited time with Baltimore, particularly with his breaking ball, but consistency has been an issue. In his big league outings this year, he has posted an earned run average north of 6.00. The organization believes that regular starts in Norfolk will allow him to refine his command and build more confidence in his fastball location.
To fill the open spot on the active roster, the Orioles recalled a reliever from the minors. The bullpen was taxed over the weekend, so adding fresh arms was a priority. Manager Brandon Hyde noted that Povich remains a part of the team's long-term plans, but the immediate focus is on getting him back to his best form. There is no set timeline for his return, but if he pitches well in Norfolk, he could be back in Baltimore before the end of the summer.
