Patriots' WR Depth Chart Still Points to a Trade

The New England Patriots have made some noise this offseason by adding wide receivers A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs to the roster. On paper, it looks like an aggressive attempt to fix a unit that has struggled for years. But a closer look at the depth chart suggests the team is not done dealing.

Brown, acquired via trade from the Titans, is a clear number one target. He brings size and physicality that the Patriots have lacked. Doubs, a fourth-round pick, adds youth and potential. But behind them, the picture gets murky. Kendrick Bourne is coming off a torn ACL. DeMario Douglas is a slot specialist with limited upside. The rest of the group consists of unproven players like Tyquan Thornton and Jalen Reagor, both of whom have yet to live up to their draft status.

The problem is not just talent, but fit. New England's offense under coordinator Alex Van Pelt is expected to rely on quick throws and yards after the catch. Brown fits that mold. Doubs does too. But the depth behind them is thin, and injuries are a constant threat. If Bourne is slow to recover or Douglas gets banged up, the Patriots are one play away from relying on players who have not shown they can produce consistently.

This is why the depth chart still points to a trade. The Patriots have cap space and draft capital. They also have a need for a reliable, veteran presence who can play outside and take pressure off Brown. A player like Tee Higgins or Courtland Sutton has been mentioned in rumors, and New England has the assets to make a deal.

The front office has been aggressive this spring, but the work is not finished. The wide receiver room looks better than it did a year ago, but it still lacks the kind of depth that contenders need. Until that changes, expect the Patriots to keep shopping.
