When we think about soccer’s biggest stars, goalkeepers often get the short end of the stick. Let’s be real—no kid grows up dreaming of making a world-class save in a drab 0-0 draw. But guess what? That one diving, fingertip save could be the difference between lifting a trophy and watching your team crash out in humiliating fashion.
So, how important is a goalkeeper’s save percentage when it comes to a team’s success? Are goalkeepers the unsung heroes of championship-winning teams, or is it simply a nice stat with little impact? Let’s dive into this (hopefully without spilling Gatorade all over our notes).
Here’s the basic formula:
Save Percentage = (Saves ÷ Shots on Target) × 100
For example, if a goalkeeper faces 100 shots on target and stops 75, their save percentage is 75%. Easy, right? But does a high save percentage actually translate to success for the team, or is it just an overrated stat?
Spoiler alert: It matters—a lot.
Take David de Gea in his prime at Manchester United. The team’s backline was shakier than a Jenga tower, but he single-handedly kept them in contention with save percentages hovering around 75-80%. Without him, they'd have been drowning in mid-table mediocrity.
For instance, during Liverpool’s title-winning season in 2019-20, Alisson Becker had one of the best save percentages in the league. Compare that to when Liverpool relied on Loris Karius—that ended in disaster (and some absolute meme-worthy moments).
Take Burnley as an example. Their goalkeepers often boast impressive save percentages, yet they still struggle because, well, they don’t score enough. A high save percentage keeps you competitive, but it won’t turn a bad team into a title contender on its own.
Look at Thibaut Courtois during his time at Chelsea versus his early days at Real Madrid. At Chelsea, he posted insane save percentages because of their defensive organization. At Real Madrid, he initially struggled before adapting to their more open style.
That said, teams gunning for silverware tend to have goalkeepers with high save percentages. It's no coincidence that many title-winning teams have world-class shot-stoppers. So the next time you see a goalkeeper making ridiculous saves, maybe give them the credit they deserve. After all, they might just be the reason their team is lifting a trophy at the end of the season.
