The Toronto Blue Jays made a significant move on the roster front, acquiring right-handed pitcher Spencer Arrighetti from the Houston Astros in exchange for outfielder Daulton Varsho. The deal, which had been rumored for weeks, finally came together late Tuesday night, giving Toronto a much-needed arm for the back end of their rotation.
Arrighetti, 25, has shown flashes of brilliance in his brief major league career, posting a 4.53 ERA across 22 starts last season. His strikeout rate sits in the top third among qualified rookies, and his slider has become one of the more deceptive pitches in the league. The Blue Jays front office believes his upside outweighs the inconsistency he showed in his first full campaign.
Varsho, who came to Toronto in a separate trade two years ago, never quite found his footing at the plate with the Blue Jays. His defensive value in center field was undeniable, but a career-low .214 batting average in 2024 made him expendable. Houston plans to use him as a platoon option in left field, where his speed and arm should play well in the spacious Minute Maid Park outfield.
For Toronto, this move addresses a glaring need. The starting rotation behind Kevin Gausman and Jose Berrios was thin, and Arrighetti offers a controllable option through 2029. Manager John Schneider hinted that Arrighetti will slot into the fourth spot, with a chance to move up if he can refine his command.
The trade also clears salary space for the Blue Jays, who are expected to make a push for a veteran bat before the deadline. Varsho was owed roughly $5.8 million this season, while Arrighetti is still on a rookie deal. That flexibility could prove crucial as Toronto looks to climb back into the wild card picture.
