The Houston Texans are bringing back a familiar face. Jadeveon Clowney, the defensive end they selected with the No. 1 overall pick in 2014, has agreed to rejoin the team. The move ends an eight-year absence that saw him play for four different franchises.
Clowney spent his first five seasons in Houston, earning three Pro Bowl nods. He was traded to Seattle in 2019 after a contract dispute, then bounced around to Tennessee, Cleveland, and most recently Carolina. Now he returns to the city where his career began, hoping to provide a pass-rushing boost to a Texans defense that has struggled to generate consistent pressure.
The timing makes sense for both sides. Houston is in the middle of a rebuild under head coach DeMeco Ryans, who played linebacker for the Texans during Clowney's rookie year. Ryans has stressed the need for veteran leadership and physical play, and Clowney fits that mold. He is still only 31, and while he has dealt with injuries, he showed flashes of his old dominance with the Panthers last season.
For Clowney, this is a chance to finish what he started. He has never won a playoff game since leaving Houston, and the Texans are not expected to contend this year. But the emotional pull of returning to the place that drafted him appears to have been strong. He said in a statement that Houston always felt like home, and he is ready to give the fans everything he has left.
The team has not announced the contract details, but it is likely a one-year deal with incentives. If Clowney stays healthy, he could be a key piece in a defense that needs playmakers. If not, it is a low-risk move for a team that has plenty of cap space and nothing to lose. Either way, Texans fans will be happy to see number 90 back on the field.
