Texas A&M's Department of Nutrition is launching a new certificate program aimed at preparing students for careers in sports nutrition. The program is designed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world practice, giving future dietitians the specific skills they need to work with athletes and active individuals.
The curriculum covers topics like energy metabolism, hydration strategies, and nutrient timing for performance. Students will also learn how to assess body composition and create meal plans that support both training and recovery. The certificate is open to undergraduate and graduate students already enrolled in nutrition or dietetics programs.
Faculty members say the goal is to produce graduates who can step directly into roles with sports teams, fitness centers, or clinical settings. The program includes hands-on labs and case studies based on actual athletic scenarios. This practical focus is meant to set students apart in a competitive job market where sports nutrition is growing fast.
The first cohort of students is expected to begin coursework this fall. The department hopes the certificate will attract students who want to specialize early in their careers. With more athletes looking for evidence-based nutrition advice, the program aims to fill a clear need for trained professionals who understand both science and sport.
