The NCAA has taken a significant step toward making flag football an official championship sport, with a target date of 2028 for the first national tournament. The organization's Committee on Women's Athletics recently recommended that all three NCAA divisions move forward with adding the sport, which has seen explosive growth at the youth and high school levels in recent years.
Formal approval from each division is expected in 2027. If that happens, flag football would become the first new NCAA championship sport added in decades. The move is seen as a direct response to rising interest among female athletes. The NFL and several corporate sponsors have poured millions into youth flag football programs, and the sport is also being considered for inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Supporters argue that flag football offers a lower-cost alternative to tackle football, with fewer injury risks and a faster path to building competitive programs. Critics, however, note that adding a new championship sport will require schools to fund additional scholarships, coaching staff, and travel budgets. The NCAA has not yet released a detailed cost analysis.
The committee's recommendation now moves to the NCAA's governance bodies for review. If all three divisions sign off, the first official flag football championship season could begin in the fall of 2027, with the national title game held in early 2028.
