Streaming giant Netflix has been making a noticeable push into live sports, adding programming from WWE and Formula 1 along with select MLB and NFL games. But despite the expanding lineup and growing federal scrutiny, co-CEO Ted Sarandos insists the company is not chasing full-season rights for any major league.
Speaking at a recent investor conference, Sarandos clarified that Netflix views live sports as a complement to its core entertainment offerings, not a pivot toward traditional sports broadcasting. He acknowledged that the strategy has drawn some criticism, particularly from those who see it as a half-measure. But Sarandos argued that securing exclusive, season-long packages would be too costly and would distract from the company's focus on scripted series, films, and unscripted content.
The comments come as Netflix prepares to stream its first NFL games on Christmas Day, a move that has attracted attention from regulators. The U.S. Department of Justice has reportedly been reviewing the league's media deals, including Netflix's role, for potential antitrust concerns. Sarandos downplayed the scrutiny, saying the company is simply experimenting with live events to see what resonates with subscribers.
Netflix's live sports bets so far have been limited to special events and highlight packages. The WWE deal brings weekly programming, but only for a set number of years, while the Formula 1 arrangement focuses on a documentary series rather than live race coverage. Sarandos emphasized that Netflix will remain selective, choosing events that generate buzz without locking the company into long-term, multi-billion-dollar commitments.
For now, the streaming giant appears content to dip its toes into live sports rather than dive headfirst into the deep end of the rights market.
