Former University of Kentucky standout Ron Mercer is set to receive a major honor this year. The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame announced that Mercer will be part of its 2025 induction class, recognizing a career that peaked during his college days. Mercer was a key piece of Kentucky's legendary 1996 national championship team, a squad widely considered one of the best in college basketball history. That season, he averaged nearly 20 points per game and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament's Southeast Regional.
After his sophomore year, Mercer entered the NBA draft and was selected sixth overall by the Boston Celtics. He went on to play for several teams, including the Denver Nuggets, Chicago Bulls, and Indiana Pacers, over a nine-year professional career. While his pro tenure was solid, his legacy remains firmly tied to that dominant Wildcats run. The induction ceremony is scheduled to take place later this year in Nashville. Mercer joins a class that includes other notable figures from Tennessee sports, though the Hall of Fame has not yet released the full list of inductees.
