Former Charlotte Hornets star Kemba Walker has officially opened a new youth sports academy in the city, a project he says is about creating opportunities for the next generation of athletes. The facility, located in the heart of Charlotte, is designed to serve as a training ground for young players in basketball and other sports.
Walker, who spent eight seasons with the Hornets and became a fan favorite, was on hand for the opening. He emphasized that the academy is not just about developing elite talent but about giving kids a safe, structured place to grow. "This is about more than basketball," Walker said. "It's about teaching discipline, teamwork, and giving kids a chance to dream big."
The hub features multiple basketball courts, a weight room, and space for other sports like volleyball and soccer. Walker noted that the facility is open to all skill levels and will offer programs for children from underserved communities. He also mentioned that the academy will host clinics and camps, with some sessions led by former NBA players and coaches.
The project has been in the works for several years, and Walker said seeing it complete is a dream come true. "Charlotte gave me so much during my time here," he said. "I wanted to give something back that would last." The academy is expected to serve hundreds of young athletes each year, with plans to expand programming in the future.
