Three landmark personal injury lawsuits have been filed against the USA Bobsled/Skeleton Federation, accusing the governing body of intentionally hiding evidence that the sport causes significant brain injuries. The cases, brought on behalf of elite athletes, center on a condition known informally as "sled head."
The suits allege that officials and coaches were long aware of the neurological dangers posed by the tremendous gravitational forces and violent vibrations athletes endure during high-speed runs. Instead of warning participants, the federation is accused of actively concealing this information, leaving athletes unaware of the potential long-term consequences to their cognitive health.
The plaintiffs describe suffering from symptoms consistent with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), including memory loss, depression, and severe headaches. Their legal action claims the federation's failure to disclose risks and implement necessary safety protocols constituted gross negligence. This litigation places a stark spotlight on the hidden perils within winter sports, challenging the narrative of sledding's risks being purely acute and physical. The outcome could prompt a major reckoning regarding duty of care and transparency in elite athletic programs nationwide.
