What to watch for in WPIAL sports: Postseason begins for baseball, softball, lacrosse

The WPIAL postseason officially kicks off this week, bringing a flurry of action across the diamond and the field. For baseball and softball, the road to Wild Things Park and Penn Hills starts now, with preliminary rounds setting the stage for bracket chaos. Lacrosse, still growing in the region, opens its own tournament with a mix of established powers and hungry newcomers.

In baseball, Class 6A and 5A teams will be the first to test the waters. Look for strong pitching to dominate early, as ace arms often carry teams through the single-elimination format. Defending champions in several classes have reloaded, but dark horses like Seneca Valley and Montour are lurking. The real story might be how weather affects scheduling, as early April in western Pennsylvania is never a guarantee.

Softball brings its own drama. The top seeds in Class 4A and 3A boast deep lineups and experienced pitchers who can shut down any rally. Teams like Armstrong and Elizabeth Forward are expected to make deep runs, but upsets are a tradition in this sport. Keep an eye on the small-school brackets, where a single error can end a season.

Lacrosse continues its upward trend. The boys and girls brackets are more competitive than ever, with programs like Mars and Shady Side Academy setting the pace. The early rounds often feature lopsided scores, but the quarterfinals should tighten up quickly.

This is the time of year when legacies are built. Every pitch, swing and save matters. The chase for a WPIAL title starts now.
