The betting market has set the bar low for Michigan State football this season, listing the Spartans' regular season win total at just 4.5. On the surface, that number makes sense given last year's 4-8 finish and a brutal stretch of conference road games. But a closer look at the roster and the schedule suggests the smart money should be on the over.
First, the schedule is far more forgiving than it appears at first glance. The Spartans avoid Ohio State and Oregon entirely. Their cross-division draws include Rutgers, Indiana, and Maryland, all winnable games. At home, they host Boston College, Prairie View A&M, and a rebuilding Illinois squad. That is three wins before you even start counting conference toss-ups.
Second, the culture shift under head coach Jonathan Smith is real. Smith inherited a program that had lost its identity, and he has spent the offseason instilling a blue-collar, physical mindset. The offensive line, a glaring weakness last year, has added size and experience. The quarterback room is deeper, and the defense returns several starters who played meaningful snaps in close losses. This team lost five games by one score in 2024. That kind of margin flips with better coaching and a year of maturity.
Finally, the intangibles matter. This is a squad that has heard the outside noise all summer. They are using the low projection as fuel. Players have talked openly about proving the doubters wrong, and that chip-on-the-shoulder attitude often translates to extra effort in the fourth quarter of tight games.
Expect Michigan State to grind out six or seven wins. The 4.5 total is a gift for anyone willing to trust the process over the preseason narrative.
