Yankees Mailbag: Aiming for a deadline makeover

There's gotta be some change on this Yankees roster, but will it be impactful enough? That is the question hanging over the front office as the trade deadline approaches. Fans are tired of the same cycle: a hot start, a brutal slump, and then a desperate scramble for rentals who don't move the needle.

The biggest issue is the lineup's inconsistency. Outside of Aaron Judge, who is producing? The bottom third of the order is a black hole, and the team's approach at the plate remains stubbornly one-dimensional. They swing for the fences, miss, and strand runners. A true makeover would mean moving on from a struggling veteran or two, but that is easier said than done with their contracts.

On the pitching side, the bullpen is still a strength, but the rotation feels fragile. Nestor Cortes and Carlos Rodon have been shaky, and counting on a rookie to stabilize things in August is a gamble. The front office needs to find a reliable starter, but they also cannot ignore the offense.

The real question is whether general manager Brian Cashman will go for a band-aid or a real shakeup. A couple of bench bats and a middle reliever won't cut it. This team needs a jolt, something that changes the energy in the dugout. If the Yankees are serious about a makeover, they need to trade from their prospect depth for a proven bat and a steady arm. Otherwise, it is just another deadline where they talk big and deliver small.
