The Carolina Panthers made a roster adjustment on Monday, signing wide receiver Deon Cain and waiving tight end Colin Thompson. The move comes just before the team is set to open its mandatory minicamp, giving the coaching staff a slightly different mix of personnel to evaluate.
Cain, a former sixth-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2018, has bounced around the league with stops in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and most recently the XFL. He brings a blend of size and speed to a wide receiver room that is still sorting out its depth chart behind top target Adam Thielen. Cain has 13 career NFL receptions for 204 yards and a touchdown, but his experience in multiple offensive systems could help him carve out a role in Carolina's new scheme under head coach Frank Reich.
Thompson, the player waived, was a versatile piece for the Panthers last season. He appeared in 15 games, primarily as a blocker and special teams contributor, but also saw limited snaps at fullback and tight end. His release suggests the team is comfortable with its current tight end group, led by Hayden Hurst and Tommy Tremble, and wants to use the open roster spot to take a longer look at a potential wide receiver.
The Panthers will begin their mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, June 13, with all players expected to be in attendance.
